Our Governors

A Message from the Chair of Governors

Welcome to the Governors page.

I am delighted to have this opportunity to speak to you on behalf of the Governors.

As we settle back into the “new school year”, the Headteacher and Redwood team work diligently to ensure all our pupils receive a high standard of education that provides stimulating, engaging and exciting lessons as well as a range of enrichment opportunities. As Governors, it is our role to support the Headteacher to build on and further develop the school’s strengths, also monitoring the school’s performance, questioning the Headteacher when appropriate.

Throughout the year, I look forward to sharing the achievements of the school with pupils, parents and staff.

I can be contacted via email: lisa.cook@parkview.derby.sch.uk

As Governors of Redwood and Parkview Primary School, we are a dedicated and friendly group of volunteers who are responsible for overseeing the management side of the school: such as strategy, policies, budgeting, safeguarding and staffing, in order to enable the school to run as effectively as possible.  We are inspired to contribute our time and knowledge by the enthusiasm of the school community and are enthused to make a difference to the education of the children.

The Full Governing Board is the school's accountable body.

The Full Governing Board’s core functions:

  • To hold the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of all staff
  • To ensure the clarity of the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction is maintained
  • To oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its budget is well spent.

The Full Governing Board adheres to a code of conduct known as the Nolan Principles (These standards are upheld by using the Seven Principles of Public Life) They set out the expectations, commitment and behaviour required to enable us as a Board to effectively carry out work within the school and its community.

As Governors we support the Head Teacher and senior leadership team, acting as ‘critical friends’ and we contribute a range of skills and expertise from our professional and personal lives to the Governing Board.  All governors take responsibilities linked to the School Development Plan, and an integral part of our role is to strategically monitor these. To ensure robust school accountability, Governors make half-termly visits and report back to the Full Governing Board.

The Full Governing Board meets together twice a term, alternating between both schools, and we are supported by a professional Clerk, who ensures any statutory responsibilities are met, also minuting any meetings. A wide range of training is available to support Governors in their role.

The Governing Board are always keen to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a governor. If you would like more details on becoming a governor, please contact Lisa Cook, Chair of Governors at lisa.cook@parkview.derby.sch.uk or alternatively contact Helen Hurst, Clerk of Governors at helen.hurst@parkview.derby.sch.uk

During the past year as a Full Governing Board, we have met six times.

  • We have overseen, reviewed and accepted the budget setting and annual accounts.
  • We have reviewed and monitored the safeguarding, special needs and inclusion policies and their implementation.
  • We have spent time in school, meeting with groups of children, such as the school council and Digital leaders and hearing about their roles in school.
  • We have reviewed and approved all school policies that were due for review, including newly written ones.
  • We have overseen planning and the delivery of elements of the curriculum; individual governors focus on specific areas.
  • We have reviewed the school development plan to set priorities for this school year, and monitor progress through data and monthly reporting including subject leader’s feedback.
  • We have attended whole school events, including parent consultation evening and fundraising events.
