In literacy we aim to study a range of literature including narratives, non-fiction, poems and film clips. We try to ensure that our units are linked to our Topic at the time and have a strong purpose for learning.
We prioritise language and vocabulary development, providing children with a range of higher-level vocabulary to make their writing interesting. Don't be afraid to use big words with your children at home - they love it! You may even find they will then use them in their writing.
Everyday, we teach 20minutes of SPaG (Spelling, punctuation and grammar) and then incorporate this into our literacy lessons.
In year 5, children are faced with new terminology that they may not have come across before. Next year, children will sit a SPaG SATs test, so it is vital that spelling, punctuation and grammar is practised at home and school.
As well as SPaG test children will face a reading comprehension SATs test. Please ensure your children are still reading with you at home regularly! Just because they can now 'read' doesn't mean they have a solid understand of the inference behind it.
Children do not need to read our school reading books if they would prefer to read their own book from home. This could even be a magazine!
